Private or Self Pay
There are advantages to paying for your mental health services on your own.
People chose to pay out of pocket for privacy reasons, to choose their providers, and to seek services not covered. Paying out of pocket for therapy decreases exposure of your Protected Health Information (PHI) since your information will not be sent to or billed to an insurance company. When people use their in-network or out-of-network insurance, medical necessity documentation for the services are required which includes, but is not limited to, a diagnosis. Once information is recorded by an insurance company, it becomes part of your health care record. Individuals who opt out of using their insurance will sign an opt out form and receive a Good Faith Estimate.
Out-of-Network Health Insurance
Many insurance plans offer out-of-network benefits. Some people will choose to work with a provider who is not covered under their insurance plan and submit their bills to the insurance company on their own. Contact your insurance plan to inquire about your mental health benefits for outpatient behavioral health. I can provide you a monthly super bill to submit. Some insurance companies may reimburse you a percentage of the session fee. Your insurance company will explain your out of network benefits, how to submit for reimbursement, and help you understand what the reimbursement amount(s) may or may not be.
The following questions are useful to learn about out-of-network services:
1. Do I have out-of-network outpatient mental health or behavioral health benefits?
2. What is covered if I use an out of network provider?
NOTE: Insurance companies may ask for the codes that will be billed. They call these CPT codes.
Initial assessment CPT code is 90791. Individual therapy CPT code is 90837.
3. What information do I need to provide for reimbursement?
This typically includes dates of service, diagnosis code, CPT code, charges, and business information.
